Landscape photos are one of the subjects that I truly enjoy looking at, and have little skill in shooting myself. Some of the things I look for in a great landscape shot are focus, perspective and color tone. I was very surprised to see that this shot was taken with a 50mm focal length. Just from looking at it, I would have suspected something much wider.
Anyway, the scene itself is stunning. The land in the foreground and off to the sides border the image very well, along with the cloud cover at the top. The water in the center gives serious depth to the entire piece as well.
The other pleasing elements for me are the very slight fog cover over the water, and how the foreground branches on the left side balance really well with the water and trees off to the right.
Exposure is a huge thing for me with landscape photos. I like seeing landscapes with their natural lighting over any heavy post-processing. Landscapes should be seen in their natural environment or they just don't seem that real. This scene is clearly exposed well, with your foreground a slighty dim but visible tone, and your background trees a nice silhouette against the sky. The dimness of the foreground also gives a sense of the time of day, which is important to determine the accuracy of the shot.
Overall, a pleasing shot to look at. A beautiful scene captured with skill. It gives me hope that I could create such a photo with a 50mm lens.
